Short guide to the city, parking and Assisi itinerary

Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli
Until you meet another roundabout that will allow you to take Viale Vittorio Emanuele III.
Continuing along this road for about a kilometre, on the left you will come across Piazza Porta Nuova and further on the car park of the same name, the end of the journey by car before continuing on foot.

Once past AssaggiAssisi with a much improved mood, continuing on via Borgo Aretino you immediately come across one of the pearls of the city: the Basilica of Santa Chiara.
The Basilica of Santa Chiara
The idea of building a church in honour of St Clare was conceived shortly after her burial on 12 August 1253, the day after her death, in the church of St George, the place already chosen for the first burial of St Francis. The new church was consecrated on 6th September 1265 by Pope Clement IV. Besides the body of the Saint, the Basilica preserves the Crucifix of San Damiano, who spoke to Saint Francis. The building is characterized by the execution of the whole body with pink and white bands of stone of the Subasio and by the majestic rampant arches supporting the two sides of the church. The interior is structured like the upper church of S. Francesco with a single nave ending in a transept with a polygonal apse. Also here a gallery runs along the perimeter, but, contrary to S. Francesco, at the height of the capitals of the pillars. On the nave, near the transept, two chapels open laterally: Saint Agnes of Assisi and Saint George. They were not part of the original plan of the basilica, but were added at a later date, as happened in the Upper Basilica of St. Francis. In the part behind the Crucifix, now the Presbytery (former chapel of the Blessed Sacrament), fresco by Puccio Capanna (1340-46), Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints Clare, John the Baptist, John the Evangelist and Francis, and other frescoes of the school of Giotto and Lorenzetti. In the left transept of the basilica, panel with the Life of St Clare by the so-called Master of St Clare (late 13th century); detached fresco with Giotto's Nativity from the 14th century. In the lunettes, scenes from the Old Testament, similar to those in the upper cycle in the Upper Basilica of St. Francis (late 13th century). The high altar is enclosed by a colonnade of 12 polygonal columns, the work of a 15th century Umbrian stonemason, with an 18th century wrought iron gate. Above the high altar stands the grandiose shaped cross (1255-1260), attributed to the so-called "Maestro di Santa Chiara", recently identified as the painter Benvenuto Benveni da Foligno, who is also said to be the author of the panel of St. Clare and the Madonna della Cortina. At the feet of the Christ, Francis and Clare adoring and the image of the abbess Benedetta who commissioned it. Above the altar, in the sails of the cross vault, the "Expressionist Master of St. Clare", that is, Palmerino di Guido da Assisi (1330-1335), Giotto's collaborator in the Basilica of St. Francis, depicted the triumph of Christian virginity with great expressive ability. In the sail towards the apse: Madonna with Child and St. Clare; in the opposite sail St. Agnes the Virgin and St. Agnes of Assisi, sister of St. Clare. In the left sail are S. Caterina and S. Margherita, while in the right sail are S. Cecilia and S. Lucia. In the right transept the panel of the Madonna della Cortina, Byzantine type Hodighitria, that is the Mother of God, XIII century, attributed to the Master of St. Clare. Frescoes also refer to St. Clare and biblical scenes by the so-called Expressionist Master of St. Clare (first half of the 14th century). In the crypt, built in 1850-72, restructured in 1935 in neo-Gothic forms, is preserved the sarcophagus with the body of St. Clare, found in 1850. Recently built is the room where the relics of St. Francis and St. Clare are displayed.
Via Santa Chiara
Once past the Basilica, take the Via di Santa Chiara. The next point of interest on the itinerary is the Cathedral of San Rufino and the house where the Saint was born. From the square next to the Basilica, you have to take the salita degli Orti and then go along via Dono Doni. At the end of this street you will see, from the left side, the Cathedral of San Rufino and in front of it the house where Santa Chiara was born.

Cathedral of San Rufino
The cathedral of San Rufino is the place of worship for the Catholic parish of the city of Assisi, mother church and cathedral of the diocese of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino. The church stands in the square of the same name, originally a terrace created in Roman times, perhaps (but there is no documented evidence) the forum of the Roman city of Asisium. The lower part dates back to the twelfth century, with three portals flanked by sculpted lions and griffins. The central portal in particular has a rich ornamentation, especially in the multiple ring decorated with reliefs of vine-shoots, spirals, allegorical figures and monstrous animals; the lunette houses Christ enthroned in a clypeus, between the sun, the moon, the Madonna breastfeeding and San Rufino. The right portal has a lunette with two birds drinking from a spring (a symbol of Christian souls drinking from divine grace), while the left portal has two lions around a vase. Above the portals runs a horizontal band with figures of animals and corbels with human and zoomorphic heads; above this is a gallery from which four animals protrude. The median area is occupied by three elaborate rose windows, around which there are corbels with some high reliefs: around the central one symbols of the Evangelists and at the bottom three Telamons. The area of the façade dates back to the end of the 13th century and is composed of a triangular gabled crowning with a Gothic arch inside, where a painting or a mosaic was probably to be inserted. To the left of the facade rises the majestic Romanesque bell tower, largely dating back to Ugone's building, with the belfry decorated with double lancet windows. The basilica-like interior is divided into three naves divided by pillars. Today's appearance dates back to the renovation of 1571 by Galeazzo Alessi; only above the vaults are traces of the original church, including the remains of a dome. Following restoration work, the side altars were removed; the operation on the left wall revealed portions of a wall from the Roman era. At present, in the cathedral there are ten minor canteens alternating with statues of Prophets, the latter works by Agostino Silva in 1672. Facing the counter-façade near the central portal are two marble statues of St. Francis by Giovanni Dupré (1882) on the left and St. Clare by Amalia Dupré (1888) on the right.
It continues with the places that have characterized the presence of St. Francis in Assisi. The route continues to the birthplace of the Saint, today the Chiesa Nuova, passing through the Piazza del Comune. From the Cathedral we take via San Rufino that leads to the town square and, from there, through via Arco dei Priori, we reach the Chiesa Nuova.
Town Hall Square
It is the heart of Assisi, where today, as in the past, the main city activities take place. It is overlooked by the main buildings of the city such as Palazzo Capitano del Popolo, Palazzo dei Priori, the Torre del Popolo and the Temple of Minerva.
- Chiesa Nuova: tradition identifies it as the paternal and native house of Saint Francis of Assisi, which was an important stop on the pilgrimages in the footsteps of the Saint. In 1610, at the behest of the King of Spain Philip III, a new church was built in Baroque style in place of the medieval one, designed by Rufino da Cerchiara.
- Temple of Minerva: returning to the square, turning your gaze to the left you will cross the Roman Forum and Archaeological Museum (Temple of Minerva). Came to light in 1836, inside are exposed sarcophagi, capitals and inscriptions from Assisi or the immediate surroundings. The remains of the Forum include the base of the temple with the access doors to the pronaos, a monumental cistern, a podium with seats for the magistrates, a small tetrastyle temple dedicated to Castor and Pollux. A second room contains three marble statues found in the Forum area.
Continue along via Portica and then, passing through via Arlando Fortini, take via San Francesco. Here, immediately on the left, there is the Portico Monte Frumentario, which opens one of the most beautiful and monumental streets of the whole city.
Monte Frumentario
Born as an ancient hospital of the Municipality of Assisi, one of the very first in Italy, the Palazzo del Monte Frumentario was built in 1267 outside the first Roman circle, on the downstream side of the road that still leads to the Basilica of San Francesco. The entrance of the structure, which is on three floors and overlooks via Fontebella, vicolo degli Esposti and via San Francesco, is introduced by a portico of seven arches with a lowered arch, supported by small columns with Byzantine capitals sculpted by Venetian stone carvers. The entrance façade is decorated with frescoes painted by an Umbrian follower of Giotto (around 1300), beyond which one enters a large hall decorated with neo-Gothic frescoes and illuminated by a large window opening onto the valley. The title of Monte Frumentario dates back to 1746, when Bishop Ottavio Ringhieri moved the seat of Monte Frumentario Barberini, a pious institution founded in 1634 by Cardinal Antonio Barberini. Contrary to what happened at the Monti di Pietà, at the Monte Frumentario the loan of grain and other products of the earth was carried out. After various uses, always concerning activities related to cultural proposals and entertainment, since 2010, following a major restoration work, the building is used as an exhibition center among the most impressive in Umbria.
Once here, the temptation to go straight ahead and reach the now very close Basilica of San Francesco is high. But you'll get there at the end, as the culmination of this itinerary. Around Via San Francesco, in fact, unravel numerous lanes and alleys that lead to several other important points of interest that you can not fail to mention and leave out. In a ray of less than a kilometre is possible to find three monumental doors that once and also today allow the entry to Assisi. To reach them and to admire them will give to the visit a quid in more, succeeding in catching a glimpse as it was the town-planning and the city organization to the times of their construction, that doesn't go away a lot from the evident point of turning that historically has suffered the installation: the advent of St. Francis. To the south of the Via di San Francesco there are two gates: the Porta San Francesco and the Porta San Pietro. In the immediate vicinity of the latter is the Abbey of San Pietro.
Abbey of San Pietro
It was founded between the end of the 10th century and the beginning of the 11th century in an area where there was an ancient Roman necropolis. It is probable that its foundation outside the city walls was part of the construction of churches and monasteries in strategic areas of the countryside desired by the monks of San Benedetto al Subasio. The monastery was under the control of the Abbey of San Pietro of Perugia. The presence of the monastery is documented since 1029, through a manuscript preserved in the Capitular Archives of San Rufino in which we can read: Terra Sancti Petri qui est monasterio, de Assisie. The church, coeval with the Basilica of St. Francis, presents the typical Romanesque-Umbrian structure of the 13th century, with the characteristic signs of the Benedictine Order; it is in fact one of the last examples of monastic architecture in Assisi, after an edict issued in the 13th century allowed only the Franciscan Order to build new buildings. The façade, in the characteristic pink stone of Mount Subasio, typically Romanesque, is divided into two orders by a cornice of small hanging arches and tripartite pilasters. The central portal presents, at the base, two lions and both the jambs and the archivolt are decorated with a raceme band; a second archivolt presents animal heads. The upper order is decorated with three large rose windows that develop in correspondence with the portals. Originally, the façade culminated in a tympanum that was demolished after the 1832 earthquake.
To the north, however, you can find the Porta di San Giacomo.
Finally we arrive at what is the culmination of this itinerary, the crowning glory of the cultural and tourist offer that Assisi has to offer. Although it is a religious complex, the Convent and Basilica of St. Francis is not only a place of pilgrimage, but it is above all a formidable artistic and historical example, of very high level and known and appreciated all over the world.
Basilica of San Francesco
Straordinario è, in entrambi i casi, l’apparato decorativo interno.
Church of San Damiano
It is situated south-east of the historical centre. It is worth going to visit it, because its history is intertwined in an important way with that of the saints symbol of Assisi: St. Francis and St. Clare. It is said that in 1205 St. Francis of Assisi, after wandering in the countryside, entered the church of San Damiano, in the Assisi countryside. Praying in front of the crucifix present inside the church, and after having insistently asked for light for his journey, faith and hope, he heard a voice speak and ask him three times to repair his house which was falling into ruin. This event was to have a profound effect on the life of the saint who composed the Canticle of the Creatures here in the last years of his life. Inside, the crucifix has a very particular appearance: Christ on the cross does not show suffering, but almost seems to stand up to communicate a message of hope with open arms. Between 1211 and 1212 Saint Clare, following a prophecy of Saint Francis, founded an order of cloistered nuns who lived there until 1260. The same church, according to Catholic historiography, was the protagonist of the main miracles of the saint: the multiplication of bread, the gift of oil, the flight of the Saracens from the cloister, some exorcisms and healings, the appearance of the cross on the bread in front of the Pope.
Rocca Maggiore
The Maggiore fortress has dominated the citadel of Assisi and the Tescio valley for more than eight hundred years, constituting the most valid fortification for their defence. You can reach the fortress on foot through the Perlici gate, built in 1316: you can admire the Assisian walls still intact that, in their long path, hook the two fortresses, Maggiore and Minore. There resided, also, the little future king of Sicily and emperor Frederick II of Swabia, entrusted by his mother Constance of Altavilla to the Duchess of Urslingen, wife of the Duke of Spoleto. The internal part of the fortress (in which, in 1972, some scenes of the film "Brother Sun, Sister Moon", directed by Franco Zeffirelli, were shot) is accessed through the entrance of the round bastion, built in 1535 by Paolo III Farnese: one then reaches the vast enclosed courtyard, where once there were the service rooms, and the male, former residence of the castellan, divided into four rooms accessible by a spiral staircase. The Maggiore fortress is joined, through the fourteenth-century walls, with the Minore fortress, or rocchetta, or cassero di sant'Antonio, built by Albornoz in 1360 in order to consolidate, towards the mountain, that part of the fortification.
Conclusions
This is not certainly a complete and exhaustive guide on what can be found in one of the pearls of the Italian cultural patrimony as Assisi. The intent is to give a small help to those who have in program or in desire to come and spend a day of culture, history and art. We wanted, at the beginning, to put the attention on an aspect that often is a little bit underestimated as the road indications, in order to make as simple as possible to arrive in the city and to enjoy the visit without the anxiety of not knowing exactly what to expect once arrived near the city.
